Summary Description

Provide technical engineering expertise and leadership to drive the development and delivery of RE Tech’s energy efficiency and decarbonization services in the built environment. This role requires direct client engagement to identify, assess and support the implementation of projects to reduce energy and/or carbon emissions through operations and capital planning activities. Lead efforts to standardize, streamline, and enhance service offerings under your purview, leveraging deep technical expertise and a client-focused mindset. Support business development efforts. Contribute to professional development and performance of RE Tech employees with respect to engineering and technical knowledge via training and coaching. Serve as supervisor to CRS team members.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Lead the development and delivery of RE Tech’s energy efficiency and decarbonization services for client real estate portfolios and assets. Provide engineering expertise, oversight and quality control of all associated work product.
    • Identify and prioritize energy efficiency and decarbonization measures, to include low and no cost strategies as well as CapEx projects.
  • Review proposed or planned equipment replacements and capital-intensive retrofit projects from client vendors; advise client teams on technical feasibility, anticipated financial and operational savings, and potential impacts on sustainability goals.
  • Coordinate support for energy efficiency and decarbonization project implementation and renewable energy procurement.
  • Coordinate with RE Tech Building Policy Team to identify transition risk exposure for client portfolios and assets, including compliance with state/local building performance standards. Perform engineering consulting to develop recommendations in support of Building Performance Standards, such as Local Law 97 in NYC.
  • Vet vendors offering engineering services and/or products, such as building equipment, software, or technologies, and manage relationships with approved vendors, serving as the owner’s representative.
    • Climate risk management in alignment with best practice guidance from voluntary standards (e.g., TCFD, IFRS) and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Serve as a technical advisor and subject matter expert to clients and internal teams, providing actionable insights, guidance on clients, and advice on critical issues to support both client needs and company objectives.
  • Ensure excellence and efficiency in client work delivered under your oversight collaborating across teams as needed to ensure client satisfaction. 
  • Lead and oversee multi-disciplinary team efforts to standardize, streamline, and enhance service offerings under your purview to maximize efficiency in delivery, ensure client deliverables are consistent with best practices, and support regulatory compliance. Propose and manage an annual budget for service offerings innovation in collaboration with the Director, CRS.
  • Lead development of RE Tech team members’ capabilities on topics addressing energy efficiency, decarbonization, and transition risk management; provide coaching, training, and feedback as appropriate. Contribute to the professional development, career progression, and performance of the CRS team with respect to technical knowledge.
  • Serve as supervisor to one or more direct reports, responsible for all aspects of employee performance management and engagement.
  • Ensure your team is properly resourced and staffed. Participate in the Talent Acquisition process, as directed by CRS leadership.     
  • Support RE Tech business development efforts by leading or contributing to client strategy meetings and scoping discussions, identifying new business opportunities, and representing the company at conferences and public speaking engagements.
  • Apply knowledge gleaned from RE Tech’s data analytics tools and climate risk analytic software tools, ongoing market research, and client collaborations to develop thought leadership materials for internal and external audiences (e.g., trainings, white papers, blog posts, webinars) that support business development efforts and strengthen RE Tech’s market positioning.
  • As assigned, operate as CRS project manager for client engagements; perform day-to-day project management responsibilities, delivering excellence and client satisfaction.
  • Properly and accurately track all time worked and expenses in BigTime.

Essential Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Deep knowledge of climate risk, energy efficiency, and building decarbonization, to include the following:
    • Decarbonization strategies – including energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy, green power procurement, and environmental certificates (e.g., RECs, carbon offsets).
    • Financial analysis and quantification of returns from investments in energy efficiency and decarbonization
    • Mandatory building performance standards and compliance pathways
    • Best practice guidance from building technical standards (e.g., ASHRAE) and voluntary standards (e.g., LEED, Living Building Challenge)
  • Knowledge of mandatory requirements (e.g., CCDAA), voluntary frameworks addressing climate transition risk and emissions disclosure (e.g. TCFD, IFRS)
  • Knowledge of carbon accounting – including methodologies, calculations, and guidance such as the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard
  • Understanding of the interconnections between climate physical and transition risks.
  • Knowledge and understanding of commercial real estate and ability to speak same language as asset managers and portfolio managers
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and other software platforms for data-driven tasks, calculations, and estimation methods.
  • Ability to perform energy and financial analyses, including simple payback, IRR, NPV, and ROI calculations.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to translate technical information for non-technical audiences and convey ideas clearly and professionally.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for managing relationships with clients, employees, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Analytical and decision-making capabilities with strong attention to detail and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, manage multiple deadlines, and excel in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of online collaboration and file sharing tools, such as SharePoint and the Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent.
  • At least 7 years of applicable work experience in a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in a role requiring detailed engineering and market expertise on the topics of energy efficiency, decarbonization, and related building-level regulations.
  • Experience developing and/or advising on successful energy efficiency, decarbonization and/or climate transition risk management initiatives in commercial building portfolios

Travel Requirements

Periodic travel is required for the role. Travel may include travel to RE Tech offices, if remote, or between RE Tech offices (Fairfax, VA and Dallas, Texas) for meetings (estimate of four times per year), as well as for Legence and/or client business needs.
