ENERGY STAR® is Fully Funded!

The program was funded at $33 million, roughly the same spending level as in prior years, but what is significant is that it is funded through its own appropriations line item for the first time ever which allows for greater accountability and enforceability. While these are positive advancements, we are cognizant of the loss of many ENERGY STAR staff members, and we are in touch with those that have remained at EPA. There is industry movement, through groups like the Alliance to Save Energy, the US Green Building Council, and others to monitor how the funds are administered to the ENERGY STAR program.

The magnitude of ENERGY STAR® cannot be understated – more than 330,000 commercial properties use EPA’s ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® tool to measure and track their energy use, water use, and/or waste and materials. These buildings span 35 diverse industrial sectors and comprise more than a quarter of all the commercial floorspace in the nation.

• In addition, 48 local governments rely on Portfolio Manager as the foundation for their energy benchmarking and transparency policies.
