Carbon Label

The Carbon Label™ is a tool that serves the investment community, communicating carbon reduction efforts in a standardized, consistent format. The label is designed to provide the market with comparable and transparent details on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and emissions reduction data for a portfolio of assets.

Consistency, Comparability, and Transparency

As more organizations make claims related to decarbonization, carbon neutrality, or net zero, there is an urgent need to understand the details—particularly when these claims are made in corporate social responsibility reports, annual sustainability reports, and stakeholder communications.

To meet this need, RE Tech Advisors developed the Carbon Label™. The Carbon Label™ allows for direct comparison of the carbon profile of multiple assets across a portfolio in order to make informed investment decisions. The Carbon Label™ does this by creating a standard, consistent format for compiling greenhouse gas emissions and emissions reduction data—organizing it by source and scope, providing transparency on data quality, and showing where and how emissions are being reduced through offsets and other efforts.

Why the Carbon Label™?

  • Assembles an organization’s emissions statement, carbon neutrality claim, or net zero claim in a consistent format that allows for peer-to-peer comparison.

  • Organizes GHG data into an easily understood scope breakdown which provides clarity into where emissions are coming from.

  • Clearly recognizes to what extent emissions are being offset either through renewable energy credits (RECs) or carbon offsets, which allows investors to judge the quality of the carbon reduction statement.

  • Provides a statement of boundaries allowing for a more detailed description of the activities that generate emissions, and which emissions sources are estimated or excluded.

  • Provides a statement of GHG reduction investment to show the extent to which energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other on-site improvements have contributed to an organization’s emissions reduction beyond purchase of RECs or carbon offsets.
